Fish print (gyotaku) of a California two-spot octopus (bimaculoides). This octopus was about 1.5 pounds and caught by the artist (John) and his son in Del Mar, California.
Gyotaku (fish printing) is the process of creating an ink print from a real fish. The basic process of “direct” fish printing (which John uses) is simple: the artist brushes sumi ink (a pigment made from pine soot) on the fish and then presses a piece of washi paper (made from mulberry bark) over the top of the inked fish. When the artist peels the paper back, an ink print of the fish comes off on the paper.
Sumi ink is non-toxic, so after printing, the fish can be washed and eaten.
Gyotaku prints are simple but capture the subtle beauty of fish and other underwater creatures that are the subject of the work. Perfect artwork for the home of avid anglers and those who love the ocean, rivers, and lakes.
These reproductions are professionally done on thick fine art paper (310 gsm) that is acid- and lignin-free. Prints are shipped in a sturdy mailing tube to ensure they arrive in good condition.
